Add Comment “I have some news today,” Eva Markvoort wrote on her blog. “My life is ending.” Markvoort, 25, was dying from cystic fibrosis, an incurable disease that causes mucus to accumulate in the lungs. In 2006, she was isolated in her hospital room due to infection, so Markvoort began a blog on her life—life with terminal disease. Less than two years after she received a lung transplant, her body began to reject the organs. “I’m drowning in the medications,” she wrote. “I can’t breathe.” For nearly four years, Markvoort wrote about her joys and struggles. Some of the entries consisted only of pictures showing Markvoort having fun with her friends and family. Markvoort said in a video entry on her blog, “I think I’m very lucky, because I’ve loved more than you could possibly think, could possibly imagine. So I’m celebrating that: celebrating my life.” She died on March 27th. We think that Eva Markvoort is a great example of a woman promoting life. Even in the face of death, she lived her life to the fullest. ![]() During the health care debate in Congress, I adamantly opposed the Democrats’ health care bill because it opens the flood gates to government funding of abortion. One of the many troubling aspects of this legislation is the requirement that each state establish a health insurance exchange by 2014. The health insurance plans that are available on the state exchanges will be eligible for federal subsidies and they will be able to offer abortion coverage. However, the statutory language in section 1303 of the bill allows states the opportunity to “opt-out” of offering health insurance plans with abortion coverage in their state exchange. Specifically, the language states – “A State may elect to prohibit abortion coverage in qualified health plans offered through an Exchange in such State if such State enacts a law to provide for such prohibition.” In order to protect the lives of the unborn, I believe the Ohio State Legislature should adopt legislation to enable the opt-out provision in the bill. I am sending a letter to state legislators in my district, the Fifth Congressional District, encouraging them to introduce and support a bill to affirmatively opt-out of allowing abortion coverage by exchange participating health plans. An overwhelming majority of Americans oppose government funding of abortion, which was recently confirmed by a December 2009 Quinnipac Poll report that 72 percent of Americans oppose public dollars being used to take innocent life. Furthermore, even research by pro-abortion publications acknowledges that unborn children are saved when government subsidies are not available to pay for abortion. It is vitally important to remain vigilant in the defense of human life. During my time in the Ohio General Assembly, and now as a Member of Congress, I have been a strong supporter of pro-life legislation. I will remain steadfast in my opposition to any bill that seeks to promote the destruction of human life, and I would encourage Ohioans to contact their state representatives and senators with the urgent message to introduce and support legislation to “opt-out” of abortion coverage. -Congressman Bob Latta, 5th Congressional District A former Planned Parenthood Director from southeast Texas is scheduled to speak next month in Stark County. Abby Johnson made national news when she resigned from her job at Planned Parenthood last fall. It was after watching an abortion on an ultrasound monitor that she was shocked with the truth about abortion. “I would say there was a definite conversion in my heart…a spiritual conversion” Johnson told Fox News. Johnson has been very proactive over the past six months speaking to people about her experiences at Planned Parenthood. She is also involved in the Coalition for Life, a pro-life group that prays outside the abortion clinic that Johnson used to work for. Right to Life of Stark County will be holding a Celebrate Life Dinner, with Johnson as the keynote speaker, on Friday, May 14th at 7PM in Massillon, Ohio. General admission tickets are $20 with special pricing for students at $15 and families of four at $60. Order your tickets by May 4th! It occurs around the world when girls, some as young as 5, are bought, sold and forced into prostitution for the profit of her abuser. It is also known as modern day slavery, and it is not just an international problem; it's a problem here in Ohio. The FBI has identified Toledo one of the top recruiting locations for underage prostitutes and there are currently an estimated 1000 minors who have been trafficked in Ohio. Trafficking is a tragic violation of the right to life and work has begun to reach out and help these victims right here in Columbus. Gracehaven, founded in 2008 by concerned leaders, is a Christian non-profit organization working in Ohio to raise awareness about human trafficking. Gracehaven also hopes to provide shelter to victims of this abuse. They are raising funds to open a house northwest of Columbus this fall. To learn more about their organization and the life-saving work that they do, please visit www.gracehavenhouse.org. We look forward to partnering with groups like Gracehaven more in the future. |
