This bill is a huge success for the life movement and shows that the Ohio Senate understands the importance of the Parental Consent Statute as well as the potential an abortion has to deeply impact a young woman. To read the full press release on this story, click HERE.
Today, the Ohio Senate voted to pass S.B. 242, a bill to revise the process of judicial bypass under Ohio’s Parental Consent for Abortion statute. In the past judges have granted nearly all requests from minors to bypass the parental consent for abortion statute (92% according to one survey). This bill will require judges to make a decision only after clear and convincing evidence is made for the girl's need for an abortion, after they've asked about the girl's understanding of possible complications and health risks that could results, and lastly after they've inquired about the extent to which the girl has been 'prepped,' by others on her answers. This bill is a huge success for the life movement and shows that the Ohio Senate understands the importance of the Parental Consent Statute as well as the potential an abortion has to deeply impact a young woman. Add Comment Ohio State Senators Gary Cates and Bob Gibbs gave sponsor testimony on SB 262 this week, reminding the Ohio Senate that the majority of Americans have agreed for the past three decades that taxpayer dollars should not fund abortions. They also mentioned the Hyde amendment which has prohibited tax-payer funded abortions in the past but does not apply to the new healthcare legislation. Senate Bill 262 prohibits qualified health plans from providing coverage for non-therapeutic abortions and it is the companion bill to HB 511. Read the sponsor testimony below:
![]() During my 15 years on the front lines of the Pro-Life fight, I’ve learned that in order for us to be effective, we must be principled, stay focused and choose our battles wisely. No matter how much the mainstream media tries to distract people from core issues facing our society, and no matter how hard they try to paint an unfair picture of those of us who defend God’s gift of Life, we must remain ever vigilant in our mission. A good example of this was during the health care debate, when Ohio Right to Life joined me and my Pro-Life colleagues in the fight to stop the most radical pro-abortion policy shift since Roe v. Wade. The debate over the health care bill also showed us that there is a huge disconnect between Congress and the American people. I am confident that America is ready to reject the radical policies they are seeing from Washington. To that end, I have involved myself with a new project that may become a new “Contract with America”. My main reason for getting involved in this project is to make sure that our pro-life, pro-family principles are represented right now. I want to share with you how YOU can get directly involved and help me win this fight! In the next few days, House Republicans will launch a website called www.AmericaSpeakingOut.com, where they will welcome feedback from regular Americans about the challenges they’d like to see Congress address. In other words…we want to know what YOU think the agenda for Congress should be right now and what your elected officials should be doing to protect you and your family. Of course, creating jobs and helping the economy are important issues, but I am asking you and everyone you know to help me put Pro-Life and Pro-Family issues as high on the radar as we can. Please keep checking the website www.AmericaSpeakingOut.com...and when it goes live…SPEAK OUT on behalf of the values that matter most. Let Republican leaders know that Life is a precious gift from God, and that the first responsibility of government is to protect God’s gift of Life! But don’t stop there— Talk to like-minded friends through Facebook, twitter, email, talk radio shows, letters-to-the-editor and whatever means are available to you, strongly encourage them to do the same. Regardless of what political party you affiliate yourself with, allowing lawmakers to hear your strong pro-life message is in our country’s best interest. Your participation is key to our progress and our future to continue our principled and effective fight. -Representative Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) ![]() Now that the primary elections have come and gone, we look ahead to the great responsibility we have which lies ahead: electing pro-life candidates to office. As we saw with the recent unfortunate passage of National Health Care, voting pro-life is crucial in order for the pro-life movement to continue. The largest expansion of abortion since Roe V. Wade came down to just 4 votes; had more true pro-life Congressmen been in office, that expansion of abortion would have never happened. More than ever, now is the time to step up and make sure your voice is heard in the halls of Congress. We encourage you to vote pro-life this fall by supporting our most recent batch of endorsed candidates selected by our Ohio Right to Life PAC. View this list today and prepare yourself to be a strong voice for the voiceless by making sure our politicians and legislators take our beliefs to heart. To visit our PAC site, click HERE. Pro-Life House Republican Leader John Boehner sent a letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on May 13th responding to her recent progress report about the healthcare overhaul. Boehner stated that it fails to mention the many discrepancies of healthcare reform that concern the Amercian people. The report failed to mention any update on the Executive Order to ban abortion funding in healthcare that was promised in March- which paved the way for final passage of the health care bill. Leader Boehner's complete letter can be read below.
President Obama nominated Solicitor General, Elena Kagan, to the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. The president’s nomination has raised many concerns among the pro-life movement. Kagan has a record of working for pro-abortion supporters and continues to voice her strong opposition to pro-life initiatives. Ohio Right to Life has assembled a brief memo on several points of concern regarding the risk of Elena Kagan’s nomination and her pro-abortion ties. For more information on Kagan’s record, check out the memo below.

This season's newsletter features some new additions and improvements that were added to it. We've added an extra printed page so we can inform you about even more pro-life news around Ohio. We've also added another author: Erin Cain, our communications intern, has been hard at work researching several topics the pro-life movement should take interest in, including human trafficking. We've also added more news from our chapters and as always, we encourage chapters to send news our way so we can share about the life-affirming work they do. While the newsletter may have some new features this time around, the message is still the same: Ohioans, whether it be our chapters, our staff or another life-affirming organization like Option Line, are hard at work creating a positive culture of life and defending the right to life in their own unique ways. We are proud to be a part of such an expansive and passionate movement and look forward to seeing what exciting developments will come to the pro-life movement in the future.

A survey released yesterday by the Ohio Right to Life Society found that independent and Republican voters share many of the same views on the direction of the state and the corresponding impact to its culture. The group also found that a majority of Ohioans believe abortions have a negative impact on the women who have the procedure and that 78 percent of independents, 83 percent of Republicans and 53 percent of Democrats surveyed opposed using tax dollars to fund abortions.
