Miami County Pro-Life Educational Foundation recently announced the winner of their annual essay contest. Daniel Sehlhorst of Troy, a senior at Lehman Catholic High School was chosen the winner and has been awarded a $1000 scholarship.
Ohio Right to Life congratulates Daniel on his achievement, and wishes to highlight his essay which is published below. *** Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness Without the First Right There Are No Others by Daniel Sehlhorst “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Often quoted and beautifully written, this line of the Declaration of Independence expresses the central principle of our nation. It states, in no uncertain terms, that the fact that human beings are created by God as equals with inherent rights is an objective truth, not a religious belief. If actions can be judged on a relative scale or redefined as we wish, morality becomes relativism and nothing more than an opinion. If that is true, the rights of human beings are merely meaningless conceptual creations that can be swept aside if they get in the way of the new morality we have convinced ourselves to be truth. Edward Herrera, Field Coordinator for the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment (NCHLA) will be giving a presentation on the need for pro-life advocacy in the critically important federal authorizations and appropriations process to ensure that tax dollars are not used in a way that violates the consciences of faithful Catholics. The presentation will be held at St. Matthew Church in Gahanna at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2011. There is no charge for attending but R.S.V.P.’s are requested to Angelita Canlas at 614-241-2540. A native of Houston, TX, Edward pursued graduate studies at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, DC. Holding various positions as a university and parish educator, he has served as the Director of Adult Faith Formation at a parish in Houston and as the Government Relations Associate at the National Pro-Life Action Center on Capitol Hill. In addition to a Masters in Theological Studies at the John Paul II Institute, Edward holds a B.A. in Theology, with minors in Catholic Studies and Political Science, from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. White Mass for Healthcare Workers - The John Paul II Guild of the Catholic Medical Association (CMA) and the diocesan Office for Social Concerns are sponsoring a White Mass for health care workers on the feast of St. Luke, October 18, 2011 at 5:15 p.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral in Columbus. St. Luke is the patron of health care workers. The White Mass is an opportunity for members of the health care professions to recommit themselves to serving Christ in their care for and healing of the sick. There will be a dinner following the White Mass for members of the John Paul II Guild and for those interested in learning more about the CMA. The NCHLA is an education and advocacy group that support the pro-life priorities of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
